Defying Odds

Couple Jennifer Ty and Gary Maxilom defied the odds when others said they wouldn’t last.

Despite the 20-year gap, Gary found love in Jennifer whom he met in a hotel in Tacloban City where the latter worked as a clerk. Both shared the same hometown, Hinabangan in Samar, which gave them instant connection upon the first meeting.

As the relationship blossomed, Jennifer’s parents expressed disapproval. Aside from the disparity in age between the couple, Gary was based overseas which further discouraged the Jennifer’s family. Nevertheless, both fought for their relationship and decided to open their own business, a merchandise store in Samar.

Eventually, financial pressures had taken a toll on their business, which almost collapsed if not for a loan they availed from the CARD, Inc. (A Microfinance NGO), an institution that aims to eradicate poverty in the country, upon the suggestion of Jennifer’s relative.

With the aid of CARD, Inc. (A Microfinance NGO), they have not only recovered but also expanded to dressed chicken shop and a restaurant in Catbalogan City.

Fast forward, their success in business proved to Jennifer’s parents that they could stand on their own feet. Not long after, they gave their blessings to Gary and their daughter who are scheduled to marry in 2019.

“We went through a lot just to make it this far, with the struggles we had from our business, our relationship, and our parents. I am very thankful that CARD was there when we needed help, and of course to my husband who never gave up on me and my family,” said Jennifer.

Looking back, the lady entrepreneur picked up valuable lessons in life and love.

“Love can never be perfect but what makes it perfect is its imperfection. Like what we had with my fiance, we went through a lot but we never gave up and fought for our love. A relationship is also like a business where you need to sacrifice to make it grow,” she concluded.
